Episode 58: Nicole Norton & Becky Lovell Inside RA MA and Guru Jagat

September 21 Episode 58: Nicole Norton & Becky Lovell Inside RA MA and Guru Jagat

Nicole Norton and Becky Lovell are whistleblowers, exposing the abuses of the RA MA Institute for Applied Yogic Science and Technology and its leader Guru Jagat (Katie Griggs). The stories of abuse, money motivation and a culture of worship of the guru are reminiscent of scientology and so many other high control organizations.

Love Mike and Leah, I feel for all the people that were and still are caught up in Scientology and other manipulative cult-like groups.

That being said, this lady sound like she was in a “Devil Wears Prada” situation. I don’t know I would put their experience on the same level at Scientology or other groups that force you to choose them over family or chase you down in the dessert when you try to leave.

She simply needed to leave and regain control of her life. Maybe there was more to the story, like they took her passport or were forcing her into servitude, but that did not come out in her story.

I couldn’t listen after 10 minutes. These women are deluded, thinking that their personalities did not contribute to being controlled by this person.

They can’t face the fact that their narcissism made them search this ‘calling’ out!

      Agreed

    • Karen says:

Exactly. The world is full of toxic relationships and people without good intentions. Most of my friends have had at least one experience working for people willing to take advantage of others. I never heard them say anything that met the cult/mind control threshold like Scientology does. It may be due to their inability to adequately communicate.

While I truly enjoyed this episode, the guest’s story was sometimes hard to follow and I could not get a good context of Kundalini yoga. I found this really great article that describes its founding, guru and decades of abuse and fraud. Here is the link: https://www.lamag.com/citythinkblog/yogi-bhajan/
The RAMA institute seems like a continuation of this cult in an David Miscavige-like way after the founder dies. My heart breaks for anyone whose lives are destroyed by this and other high control groups. Kudos to your guests for their courage and continued fight!

Love you guys so much but the episode was a huge miss for me. I still don’t understand what this is even about. Even when you asked them to explain it they couldn’t explain it.

    But I love you!

  • Steven Trinidad says:

Hey guys, Just heard you mention Westboro, the “Batist Church” Hate group. Would be great to hear from someone that escaped that cult if you can manage it.

  • Andrew says:

So far this was the one and only episode I really struggled to get through. I hope you’ll do more research and vetting of guests in the future. You two have a huge platform here and sharing it with guests like this does a dis-service to the podcast and your listeners (like me) who actually survived being in a cult.

Working for a narcissistic and verbally abusive boss sucks in any scenario but that didn’t seem like a cult as it was portrayed by the guests, it just seemed like a terrible career choice.

Not everyone selling snake-oil is running a cult.
